ABOUT

Redd is a law firm based in London with intellectual property at its core.

We advise on the protection, enforcement and exploitation of intellectual property assets, including, breakthrough technologies, global brands, iconic designs and famous creative works.

All of our partners are recognised as leaders in their fields, ranked in the leading directories and involved in significant intellectual property organisations. We only recruit lawyers that we believe have the potential to be future partners of the firm.

Our lawyers work efficiently in close-knit teams to control costs and ensure a flexible and personal service which is partner-led. We have a strong collaborative and inclusive culture. We aim to deliver excellence without ego. Above all, we enjoy our work.

We are always interested in hearing from talented lawyers.

We expect our lawyers to have fantastic pedigree. This means that excellent academics and training at a well-respected law firm are prerequisites for working at Redd.

But it is just as important that you are the right ‘fit’: we spend much of our time at work and it is important that we all get on and enjoy each other’s company. Which means that Redd's lawyers work as a close-knit group so that clients get the benefit of our collective knowledge: collegiality is at the heart of the firm's ethos.  So, you need to be a team player; someone who, without ceremony, will roll up their sleeves and work alongside the rest of the team with enthusiasm and commitment.

We are an ambitious, collaborative and entrepreneurial firm. You must share our ambition, and be willing to embrace our approach.  You must also be able to build strong personal relationships and be driven by the desire to make a valuable contribution to our clients’ businesses and to the firm.

If you think you meet these requirements and are interested in joining the team, then please send us your CV with a personal covering email to careers@redd.eu.  We prefer direct approaches from candidates; it shows us that you are proactive and willing to take the initiative.

If you are successful in securing a job with Redd, then we can promise you a rewarding career. We will ensure that you develop to your full potential by exposing you to a range of high quality and challenging work in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Unfortunately, we do not offer training contracts.

By mid-2004, Sara Ashby, Simon Chalkley and Charters Macdonald-Brown who had all worked together for many years in their previous law firm in London had decided to set up Redd as a completely new law firm with intellectual property at its core.  This bucked a trend at that time of specialist law firms going the other way and merging and disappearing into ever larger general law firms.

They sensed that there was a demand from clients of all kinds and sizes right up to major corporates, for IP focused firms who could provide high quality advice and personal service.

The name Redd was chosen as a strong and distinctive name which clients would remember.  It is a play on the colour red, a primary colour and also one that is closely associated with iconic London – red buses, red telephone boxes, red post boxes and red brick buildings. The alternative spelling was chosen to enhance its distinctiveness and capitalise on an intriguing meaning of an old word of Scottish dialect origin:

"to save, rescue or free a person, to remove an obstruction, to put an end to a quarrel or confusion, to part or separate combatants, to put right affairs of business, to disentangle, unravel or sort out..."

To celebrate our 10th anniversary we made a little animation which you can watch here.

We undertake a range of activities which are intended to make a positive impact on the planet and the people we share it with.

We support causes that are close to the hearts of our staff, including:

Environment

We seek to reduce the negative impact that our business has on the environment in two key ways: by minimising the amount of energy and paper that we use, and by using low impact modes of transportation wherever practicable. Our staff are encouraged to turn off lights and computers when they leave the office, to think before they print, to recycle as much as possible and to make short journeys on foot, by bike or using public transport.

Ethical Sourcing

We seek to source from ethical and/or sustainable sources. Wherever possible the tea and coffee we provide to our staff is Fair Trade accredited and the paper we use is from FSC sources.

Pro Bono

We do not believe that lack of financial means should be a bar to obtaining high quality legal advice and so we frequently offer our services to deserving charities and individuals on a pro bono or reduced-fee basis.  Examples of our pro bono work include regular participation in legal advice drop-in clinics, acting for a number of charities and charitable endeavours in relation to various branding, copyright and sponsorship issues, and advising selected individuals and not-for-profit organisations in relation to a range of intellectual property issues.

Members of the Redd team provided legal advice on a pro bono basis to the ‘Coxless Crew’, a team of women who undertook an unsupported continuous three–stage row across the South Pacific Ocean (www.coxlesscrew.com) in 2015.  Their journey started in San Francisco, California and finished in Cairns, Australia (with brief stops in Hawaii and Samoa to re-stock on essential supplies).  The entire expedition covered 8,446 miles and took 5-6 months.

The Coxless Crew undertook this challenge to raise awareness and funds for two charities, ‘Walking With The Wounded’ (in particular for a dedicated fund to help injured servicewomen) and ‘Breast Cancer Care’.  The Redd team have helped draft a team agreement, negotiated a contract with a documentary maker and have assisted in copyright assignments and licences.

Diversity

We offer a supportive and inclusive work environment.  Each member of staff is unique and valued as an individual: we want their personality and individualism to enhance the fabric of the firm.  This is an important aspect of our culture.  As a firm, we believe that this makes us stronger, more balanced, and better equipped to deal with a wide range of situations.

Charitable Giving

In addition to helping specific organisations through our pro bono work, we also support various charitable campaigns and events, both within the intellectual property community and outside it.  In addition, a number of our staff are trustees of registered charities, including the Island Trust and the Laura Case Trust and are deeply involved in the fundraising and administration aspects of these organisations.

Sport and Fitness

The wellbeing and health of our staff is very important to us and we actively encourage staff members to stay fit and participate in regular exercise.  To achieve this, we offer gym membership as a discretionary benefit for all staff members and as a firm we participate in a number of sporting events and challenges. In the past few years these have included competing in various cycling and running races such as the Hercules 100 mile Cycle Race and the Great City 5km Run, often raising money for charity.
